George meets Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma

Local MP, Andrew George, met a range of Burmese MPs including Aung San Suu Kyi, the Leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) which recently won 43 of 45 parliamentary seats contested in a by election during a packed three day visit of the country.

Mr George and three fellow Westminster parliamentarians met Aung San Suu Kyi at her home in the administrative capital, Naypyidaw.

The MPs were visiting the country to build links with the Parliament of Myanmar (Burma) prior to the next stage in the transition to democracy with full parliamentary elections in 2015.

The brief visit included a two hour meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi. They met representatives of both Houses of Parliament and a wide range of political parties and groupings, also including the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) – which along with the military has controlled the country in recent decades.

Mr George said: “The recent elections were an important step in Myanmar’s democratic transformation. Very little can stop Aung San Suu Kyi becoming the major player in the future development of the country. But, clearly, the present Government will do all it can to resist the further successful development of the NLD. Aung San Suu Kyi made clear that she was anxious that the international community continues to monitor progress and to ensure that there is a free and fair election in 2015.”
