West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, yesterday joined local postie, Caroline Humphries, to help her with a delivery round.  Mr George took part in the national ‘Walking in Your Postman’s Shoes’ initiative where MPs join a local postman or postwoman on their round.

Mr George started at the Penzance Delivery Office early yesterday morning and joined postie Caroline Humphries on her delivery route which took them through the centre of Penzance.

Mr George said, “Caroline was very patient.  I hope I didn’t slow her down too much!  Our postal workers do an important and much more complex job than many imagine.  It was a privilege to be given the opportunity to appreciate their work first hand.  I suspect that most people take our wonderful postal workers for granted.”

Jonathan Binney, Royal Mail Penzance Delivery Office Manager, who briefed Andrew before he set off on his walk said: “We’re delighted that Andrew is taking the time to experience the everyday challenges faced by our delivery postmen and women.

“The visit gave us the opportunity to show Andrew how we are modernising and transforming the organisation. We are investing in new sorting and delivery equipment as we respond to the changing nature of the modern postbag. We are delivering more parcels and fewer letters than ever before and the tools for the job need to reflect that.”
