Euro millions must give Cornwall jobs boost legacy

Posted on: 1st July 2013

The MP for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Andrew George, welcomed the statement at the weekend by his Liberal Democrat colleague, Business Secretary, Rt. Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, which confirmed €592.9 million (£512.85m) will be available for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for the next European Structural Fund programme from 2014 to 2020.

Mr George said, “The confirmation that Cornwall will receive substantial funding until 2020 is welcome.  But this will probably be our last slug of Euro aid.

“It is therefore vital that projects which give Cornwall a jobs boost legacy are brought forward.  Maritime infrastructure, “green” engineering, the creative industries and space science are all potential growth areas and can all be underpinned and complemented by growth in higher and further education.

“Although the Local Enterprise Partnership consultation closed at the weekend, it is really important that, following this announcement, everyone has the opportunity to put their ‘shoulder to the wheel’ to support plans which create high quality local jobs in the Cornish economy.”
