EU animal protections
In November 2017 Conservative MPs voted against transposing EU animal protections into UK law. Following a public backlash the Conservatives promised to introduce their own law; to recognise animal sentience – that animals have feelings. We warned that Government needed these laws before our departure from the EU.
But nothing’s happened. As well as removing protections for animals this failure leaves the UK open to lower animal welfare imports such as chlorinated chicken and puts our wildlife at greater risk.
