Duchy of Cornwall

The MP for the West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives, Andrew George, has welcomed the decision by an Information Tribunal which defines the Duchy of Cornwall as a public body.

Mr George said, “The Duchy plays an important role in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and its contribution to the life of our communities is much appreciated. Through the Duchy, Cornwall has a unique constitutional relationship with the Crown and the State. It is a source of pride for us.

“For some time, there has been contradictory messages about whether the Duchy has a constitutional role in respect of its connection to the Crown or whether it is merely a private estate like any other.

“The ruling of the Information Tribunal helps to take this matter forward and, in my view, will provide a firm foundation for the future. This might potentially include the Duchy taking a more engaged and constructive role in exploring modern aspirations for the future governance of Cornwall.”

Mr George had been quoted in national news earlier in the week following information he had uncovered that the Duchy has a veto on some legislation going through Parliament.
