Guide Dogs

People with disabilities should never face humiliating or disabling circumstances, particularly when it comes to being refused entry due to their guide dog. These animals are not just companions but essential aids for those with visual impairments, enabling them to live fuller, more independent lives. I will use my voice in Parliament and work with my fellow Liberal Democrat parliamentary colleagues to support the Guide Dogs charity in their campaign for wider access.

Training, care, and access to guide dogs are central to our ongoing efforts. The training of guide dogs is a costly and resource-intensive process, and too often, the significant financial burden of this vital service is overlooked. The Government must ensure sufficient funding to continue the training and care of these remarkable animals, and to make sure that people with disabilities are not penalised for needing such assistance.

Furthermore, we are advocating for greater accessibility in public spaces so those with guide dogs, visual impairments, or other accessibility needs can move freely and safely. While this doesn’t directly address the issue of entry refusals to businesses and services, it is a vital step toward creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for all.

This includes exploring potential changes to the Equality Act 2010 to strengthen protections and support for those with guide dogs. Additionally, we are pushing for more businesses to be incentivised to become “guide dog friendly,” making it easier for individuals with disabilities to access the services they need.

I will continue to champion these causes and work towards a society where those with guide dogs can navigate the world without unnecessary barriers.
