Promoting the Politics of Courage

Handala Freedom Flotilla

The unlawful seizure of Handala, coming so soon after the shocking detention of the Madleen, is yet another reminder of the international community’s failure to uphold the rule of law and defend those who act in the name of peace and justice.

I’m relieved to hear that the 21 volunteers taken from Handala in international waters have now been released. Their courage and commitment to humanitarian principles deserve our admiration. However, we must not lose sight of the broader injustice: over 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners remain incarcerated under the Israeli occupation – among them hundreds of children – many subjected to appalling treatment in clear violation of international law.

This situation is intolerable. I will continue to press for the restoration of humanitarian aid, delivered through legitimate and peaceful means. A ceasefire is urgently needed, not only to secure the release of hostages from both sides but to begin the long-overdue process of rebuilding peace and working towards a two-state solution.

The UK Government should have acted swiftly and decisively to protect the Handala and its crew, which included British citizen Chloe Fiona Ludden. It must now engage through diplomatic and international channels to ensure the safety of all those who risk their lives to uphold humanitarian values.

I commend the Freedom Flotilla Coalition for its principled stand against the blockade of Gaza. Their mission is grounded in international law and the universal right to resist oppression. So long as Israel continues to impose collective punishment and mass detention, we must stand firm in our commitment to justice, dignity, and freedom for all.
