Conservatives can be conquered if we can cooperate
Is the progressive centre-left splintering into factions? Factions which re-rehearse historical disagreements with each other? Or are we witnessing early turmoil which will lead to a more cooperative and powerful re-alignment?
11 brave MPs resigned this week in protest at increasing evidence of intolerance and bigotry in the ranks of their former Parties. They deserve our appreciation.
Of course, those who are “without sin”, who ply armchair cynicism because they’ve never had to take difficult decisions and their keyboard warrior friends will want to re-fight old battles and drive wedges.
But the rest of us must highlight that more unites us than divides us. If we don’t work to find a common platform between people who fundamentally agree with each other then extreme right Conservatives will continue to govern for years and perhaps decades to come.
I have consistently worked to seek common cause. Because the centre-left largely agrees across the tribal barriers. But the tribes seem to conspire to hand power to the Conservatives because they prefer to pursue self-defeating disagreement than productive cooperation.
Let’s learn from the mistakes of the past. Let’s give people hope. Have the courage to work together. Then we will defeat the dominant right, which still now is growing in strength.
