Congratulations – “England is no longer cut off” – George

The MP who expressed concern in Parliament that ‘England could be cut off’ has welcomed the forthcoming re-establishment of the full rail service from his constituency in Penzance to Paddington through the severed link along the coastline between Teignmouth and Star Cross which will re-open this coming Friday, 4th April.

Mr George had first raised concerns in Parliament with the Prime Minister on the day after the storms which severed the rail line at Dawlish and has had many meetings with the Transport Secretary, other Ministers, Network Rail officials and others to monitor the progress of the work to restore the line.

Mr George said, “This has been a magnificent effort and congratulations are due to all concerned.

“It was absolutely right that we highlighted the importance of restoring this link and I’m pleased that, as far as this section of the line is concerned, the Government ensured that ‘money was no object’!

“Cornwall has remained open for business throughout this and the opening of this stretch of the rail line will further reaffirm this message at a time when Cornwall can anticipate hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region in the coming weeks.

“We now need the Government to come forward with their plans for the long-term resilience of the Penzance rail link and to confirm that the million and a half people who are served by this rail line receive investment which is in proportion to the £multibillion invested in HS2 for the north and Cross Rail benefiting the wealthy south east.”
