Andrew George has seconded EDM2332. Motion reads: “That this House congratulates the Blaenau Gwent Chartist and Historical Society on its work in celebrating the successes of the Chartist movement and commemorating the lives of those who died in pursuit of their cause; notes the remarkable achievements for British democracy of the Chartist movement, from secret ballots to the abolition of property qualification for those standing for parliament, as well as the important contribution made by the movement to universal suffrage; and finally wishes to remember the Chartists who died in the Newport Uprising led by people from the South Wales valleys on 4 November 1839 and the sacrifice they made for the democratic freedoms enjoyed in the UK today.”
