Burial charges – MP seeks review
Andrew George MP is urging Cornwall Council Chiefs to review a decision to raise burial and cremation charges next month.
A number of constituents have contacted Mr George to express their dismay at the move. It will mean in some cases charges for burial in Cornwall Council owned cemeteries will more than double.
Mr George said: “Locals are dismayed. This is a death tax on poor families. Many constituents will worry about how they will be able to meet these costs.
“The Council must review the decision.”
Mr George has been told that a cremation plot at a council cemetery currently costs £234 but from April 1 will cost £800. A kerb memorial plot will rise from £708 to £2,000.
Cornwall Council has 24 operational cemeteries, 10 closed cemeteries and is responsible for the maintenance of more than 50 closed churchyards.
