Bovine TB and badgers statement

Posted on: 3rd April 2014

The MP for the West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives, Andrew George, expects to welcome the Government’s statement on measures to tackle Bovine TB today.

He has been a leading critic of their policy to proceed with two pilot culls in Gloucestershire and Somerset which he has warned Government Ministers “runs the very high risk of making the situation worse”.

However, he hopes that Ministers will announce today that they will not “roll out” the policy beyond the two pilots.

Mr George will encourage Ministers to provide more support to badger vaccination projects like that which he and the Zoological Society of London are planning; the first community-led large scale badger vaccination project which will cover the 200km² of Penwith and other parts of West Cornwall later this summer.

The Government is expected to make a statement at approximately 12.30pm.
