Boost in local apprenticeship figures

Posted on: 12th March 2013

Local MP, Andrew George, has welcomed figures that show that more than 6,000 people were on an apprenticeship last year in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, an increase of 67% on 2009.

The figures are an important boost for the role of apprenticeships and for young people and come as National Apprenticeship Week is underway. National Apprenticeship Week aims to raise awareness and celebrate the successes of the apprenticeship scheme.

Mr George said: “Apprenticeships provide a solid route for under 25 year olds to learn the skills and get the experience necessary for a successful career.

“Liberal Democrats in the Coalition Government have strongly promoted and invested heavily in apprenticeships because they are one of the most effective ways of helping young people get jobs. Apprenticeships also allow us to build a stronger economy, with a highly-skilled and flexible workforce.

“Of course Apprenticeships depend on willing employers making opportunities available. I hope that National Apprenticeship Week will prove to be an opportunity to celebrate the success of our apprentices and for businesses to see how valuable apprentices can be to them.”
