MP confident that Scillies ferry funding will be kept
14.06.2010 Local MP Andrew George had already spoken to Transport Ministers emphasising the importance and uniqueness of the Isles of Scilly Ferry Link prior to the Transport Secretary’s announced funding review on Friday.
Commenting on the expected review, Mr George said, “The Isles of Scilly Ferry Link project must be delivered in the next 4 to 5 years as the seaworthiness certificates for the two boats which currently provide the service may not be extended beyond 2015.
"Compared to road schemes the Scillies link is in a category of its own.
"I note that there are already some who are keen to find scapegoats to blame. This is not an unfortunate goal line fumble.
"In fact, a calm consideration of the opportunities and challenges may be required. The costs of some elements of the project may have to be reconsidered by the Councils.
"Delays caused by the Council's handling of the scheme should not be allowed to put this important project in jeopardy. Having helped to secure the funding in the first place, I'm not prepared to let it slip away at this stage.”
