14477758771_44258fd402_zWest Cornwall MP, Andrew George, has welcomed the announcement that Cornwall’s bid for £1.95m to carry out improvements to the Jubilee Pool in Penzance has been approved by the Government – this will enable the repairing of the West Cornwall Pool and secure its long term future.

Mr George, who has set up a Working Party to drive the case for better offshore protection and an offshore breakwater for Penzance Harbour and Seafront – benefiting Jubilee Pool – has had private meetings with Government Ministers in the Department for Communities and Local Government to press the case for Coastal Communities funding for the iconic pool.

Mr George said, “This is excellent news and no more than Penzance deserves.  Of course, this should be seen as Phase 1 of the future and further development of the Jubilee Pool, Seafront and, ultimately, major marine investments bolstered by an offshore breakwater for Penzance in the years to come.

“I know that Cornwall Council will be looking to the Town Council and the ‘Friends’ of Jubilee Pool to take on greater responsibilities for the pool once this phase of works have been completed.

“This is a cause for significant celebration for the town and thanks to all those who have supported the campaign, signed petitions and made representations, etc.”

The bid to the Coastal Communities Fund was jointly submitted by Cornwall Council, Penzance Town Council and the Friends of Jubilee Pool in May. The funding ensures that essential structural works on the Pool, including repairs to the storm damage, can now be carried out.  It also includes a funding package to help to increase users and visitors to the Pool so that it can become more sustainable in the future. These include the development of a new management structure, hosting events and a range of new aquatic activities, such as Group Fitness, Water Polo, Kayaking and Sailing.
